When Textiles Meet Modern Dance: Nick Cave

As we were leaving MASS MoCA, my eye spotted a curious visual surprise: "Meet Me at the Center of the Earth", featuring Nick Cave. No....not that Nick Cave. A different one. And boy, his work is mind-boggling. As soon as we got to a computer, I had to find out more.

Nick Cave is a contemporary dancer and fiber artist. He created what he calls "Sound Suits", fiber sculptures, some 20 feet tall using a wide range of techniques that include, embroidery, crochet, knitting, and rug-hooking with found and re-purposed materials. He uses everything from twigs, scavenged yarn, sequins, bottle caps, vintage toys, to ceramic figurines, human hair and other material. His suits look African and contemporary. They merge textile art, performance and sculpture and are named for the sounds they make when worn and performed......

Just what I said........mind-boggling.

  3. I've seen the pictures of Cave's work but I wasn't sure what to think about it! He was taking some Malian ceremonial pieces and they scarily resembled Ku Klux Klan robes!

But when you see these pieces move...captivating.

    I LOVE this! -roe.
